Not Just a Porch, a Game Changer
A 1960s home in Takoma Park, originally lacking a porch, was transformed into a welcoming, spacious, and cohesive outdoor living area. The project focused on enhancing curb appeal, creating a low-maintenance space, and preserving the property’s existing trees—a key requirement in the area. The goal was to design an inviting extension that seamlessly blended with the home’s mid-century character while offering practical, long-lasting functionality.Creative problem solving
Placing the shower next to the chimney was a unique challenge because the homeowners wanted to keep the charming, pie-shaped windows. To solve this, we cleverly used privacy film on the windows and created a cozy seating area, perfectly combining function and style.

Key Features
Spacious Porch Design: Smiley Renovations added a barrel-vaulted ceiling portico and a 10x12-foot side porch for relaxation and entertaining.
Cohesive Aesthetic: To complement the original home, we incorporated brick piers, matching shutters, a painted door, and custom 1950s/60s-style metal railings.
Architectural Harmony: The design used a mix of gable and shed roofs to align with the existing roofline.
Low-Maintenance Materials: For durability, we chose composite decking, custom iron railings, a clear-finished wood ceiling, and bluestone-capped brick piers.
Added Resilience: PVC elements were integrated into the facade for long-term weather resistance.

The Result
The completed project successfully delivered a charming and functional porch that elevates the home’s curb appeal and enriches the homeowners’ daily life. By balancing aesthetics, practicality, and environmental considerations, the transformation created an inviting outdoor space that harmonizes with the home’s original design while standing the test of time.
